Biography of tools (updated after more than a year)

I am slightly updating the list that I posted last year.

Manuscript workflow

  • Markdown and pandoc for document preparation and git + bitbucket for sharing with co-authors. Convert to latex or docx using pandoc before submission.

Operating systems

  • Major: Unix → Solaris → Redhat → Suse → Ubuntu & Pop-OS
  • Others: Windows
  • Reason: I love Free Software.

Text Editors

  • Vim
  • Started with Vim, did not find any rason to change.

Formatted text

  • Microsoft Word → Lyx → Latex → markdown.
  • Others: MS word, Libreoffice Writer, and Latex
  • Reason: I prefer markup to gui, typing to clicking. Also I prefer opensource.

Plotting

  • Origin → Xmgrace → Gnuplot → matplotlib in Jupyter Notebook
  • Others: Excel
  • Reason: Free software is preferred.

  • Sribus

  • Main: Z-matrix → molden → Gaussview → Material Studio Visualiser → Avogadro
  • Others: Gaussview, molden

  • Main: molden
  • Others: Avogadro
  • Reason: Avogadro is Free software, molden is lightweght.
