Prof. Sven Lidin, a professor of materials chemistry at Lund University, Sweden, will visit the Department of Chemistry, IIT Kharagpur, from 11th October to 11th November 2024. He is a renowned structural chemist known for contributing to periodic and aperiodic crystallography. He discovered a triply periodic minimal surface generated from a Bonnet transformation of the H-surface, which was named by the mathematics community as the Lidinoid after his name. Prof. Lidin has over 30 years of experience in research and teaching and is active to date. So far, he has authored 250+ research articles published in prestigious peer-reviewed journals of international repute. He has collaborated extensively with many renowned research groups in solid state and materials science across the USA, Europe, and India. He was awarded the Göran Gustavsson Prize (Royal Academy of Sciences) in 1997 and the Norblad Ekstrand medal (Swedish Chemical Society) in 1999. He has been a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences since 2002 and the Nobel Committee for Chemistry from 2003 to 2015 (chair 2011-2013). In 2010, he was elected to the Royal Physiographic Society in Lund and the Academy of Engineering Sciences. Prof. Lidin chairs the prestigious Solvay Prize and is a committee member for the Ho-Am prize. Prof. Lidin had various administrative experiences. In particular, he was the president of the International Union of Crystallography (2018-2021). An association with such a world-renowned academician is truly an asset for the Institute, and it will remarkably improve the academic relations between IIT Kharagpur and universities in Sweden, especially the Indo-Swedish research collaboration.
