Research Statement

Research in our group is focussed on the synthesis of functionalized nanostructured materials and their nanocomposites through indigenously developed, novel and simple solution phase processing techniques i.e., through “bottom-up” approach.

Nanostructured materials, by virtue of their boundary surface-determined properties, bring about novel properties (e.g., extraordinary mechanical, electric, magnetic etc.) compared to their bulk counterparts. The challenge is to use chemistry to manipulate the particulate dimensions/ morphologies of a material to accomplish the desired nanostructure or to modify / functionalize their surface through appropriate manoeuvring of the chemical composition and the processing parameters. The motivation is to study the structure/property correlations of the nanostructures for exploiting their technological benefits in the field of – catalysis, sensors, pigments, ferroelectric/ magnetic device fabrication, separation technology, biomedical applications etc. The systems of interest include: Magnetic oxides (spinel ferrites, orthoferrites, iron garnets); Structural and other mixed oxide materials (e.g., chromites, aluminates, zirconates, vanadates, molybdates, tungstates); Double & complex ferroelectric oxides with perovskite/ layered type perovskite / tetragonal tungsten bronze structures; Curved nanostructures of layered MoS2 and WS2 etc.

Our recent research-ventures, carried out in collaboration with the School of Medical Science and Technology, IIT Kharagpur has been on the development of biocompatible nanostructures/ nanocomposites for (a) fabrication of nanocarriers for targeted drug delivery for the treatment of cancer (both, in-vivo and in vitro studies) using surface functionalized magnetic nanoparticles, fluorescent carbon dots, hollow / mesoporous inorganic nanostructures; (b) spectroscopic detection of toxins (such as, hydrogen peroxide and heavy metals) using carbon-based nanocomposites; and (c) development of florescent probes for biomedical applications.
